Whatnot's New Commission Tiers Start September 21: What It Actually Means

September 17, 2026

Starting September 21, Whatnot is changing how much it takes from every sale. Your commission rate stops being a flat number and starts being tied to how much you sell over a rolling 28 day window. Sell more, your rate drops for the next 28 days. Sell less, it goes back up. There is no badge, no permanent status. You are re-earning your rate every single period.

This is not the same thing as Premier

Premier status and these new tiers are two different systems that used to be tangled together and are now separate. Premier still gets you the badge, better placement in search, and priority support. Right now, Premier sellers also get a 10 percent discount stacked on top of whatever tier rate they land in, but that stacking ends October 31. Starting November 1, the Premier discount disappears completely. From that date forward, your commission rate is decided purely by your sales volume, not by your seller status.

Your rate is already set before the 21st gets here

Whatnot is not starting everyone at zero on September 21. It already looked at your sales from August 24 through September 20 and will slot you into whatever tier that volume earns. So the rate you open with on the 21st was decided by a month you already lived through.

The rate depends on what you sell, not just how much

Whatnot sorts sales into six categories, and each one has its own rate table: Sports, TCG, Fashion, Other Collectibles, Coins, and Other. Your total sales across every category combined decide which tier you land in, but each sale is still charged at its own category's rate within that tier. Most general vintage and antique sales are expected to fall under Other Collectibles or the general Other bucket, though Whatnot has not published an exact map of every browse category to one of the six buckets. Your own Seller Hub is the place to confirm your actual rate. Check under Orders, open a completed sale, and the receipt shows the exact rate that sale was charged.

Know the number before it changes on you

A tiered system rewards the sellers who already know their numbers and punishes the ones who don't. If you don't know your sales volume over a rolling month, you don't know your tier, and if you don't know your tier, you don't know your real margin anymore. Write down what came in, what Whatnot took, what the items cost you, and what you spent on supplies and giveaways, every show. That sheet is the only way to stay ahead of a rate that resets on you every 28 days.

A lower commission rate does not help you if the room stays empty. If your titles and descriptions are not giving the platform enough to work with, I built a free tool for that. Score your show title, item titles, and descriptions, run an A/B test, build a bio, and work the peak-performance checklist before your next show. Find it at modern-roots-title-tool.pplx.app.
